I’ve seen this idea lots of places … and I finally had the opportunity to challenge the kids to this activity while we were on vacation last week.
With Honor, my 2 year old, I showed her a simple example and how the larger rocks were on the bottom. She was able to stack 3!
With Henry, my 5 year old, we challenged each other to see how many we could stack:

And I know that this challenge is FAR from finished!
This activity could easily be a great play therapy activity. It practices motor skills, patience, coping with frustration, problem solving, possibly teamwork, and is a great opportunity to discuss creating balance. There is something very soothing about taking the smooth, warm rocks in our hands and creating balance with them.
