making & using … A Sticker Countdown Board
If you know my daughter Honor, or have even seen the photos of her on this blog, you know that she is usually dressed in princess garb. On rare occasions she will just wear play clothes, but more often than not she will be wearing one of her many princess dresses (or at least a tutu). For about a year now she has loved everything princess. Since last fall she has been coveting the princess partyware (everytime we go shopping) and I have been saying, “We can get it for your 3rd birthday party.” So, this month it was finally time!
Due to the extremely high anticipation of this event, I helped her understand the passing of the time before the big day by creating a sticker countdown board. All it takes is a foam board (but regular paper works fine too), markers, and stickers. On the day we made it (which was the day we received a lot of the party supplies in the mail), I counted up the days (or “sleeps”) until her party and wrote them in marker randomly all over the board. (I highlighted the “1” as well as “4” because when there were 4 days left to her party it was her actual birthday). Then, each day she added one sticker to the board to count down the days. I explained that once all the numbers were covered up with stickers it would be the day of her party!
The Sticker Countdown Board really helped her understand that the days were getting closer and kept her from continually asking, “When’s my party?” or “Is today my party?” It was also great practice for number recognition and introducing the concept of “counting down”.
