“Bear Says Thanks”: Learning Homophones

This month the Virtual Book Club for Kids is featuring Karma Wilson.  The kids and I had only read of couple of her books before, so it was a lot of fun to explore her books in my depth his month.  Here are some of our favorites …

It was hard (as it is almost EVERY month) to pick just one book to focus on, but in the end I choose “Bear Says Thanks” because of the timeliness (being November with Thanksgiving right around the corner) AND the fact that the book complimented my son’s 2nd grade spelling homework so well.  His class is working a learning homophones (words that sound the same but are spelled different).  And being a professor of Master level psychology students that sometimes STILL need work on this, I LOVED the fact that his teacher is trying ingrain these tricky words into the heads of 7 and 8 year-olds NOW.

What I did was simply read through the book an find all the homophones (there’s A LOT in this book which makes it PERFECT for this activity). I made a list of them, then enlarged the font size, printed them out, and cut each word out individually.

I also took sticky tabs and placed them near each homophone in the book.

I laid all the cut-out homophones and began reading, “Bear Says Thanks” to my son (and held the book so he couldn’t read the text too … he’s a sneaky one, gotta keep one step ahead at all times!)  Each time I came to a homophone I asked him to identify which one was the correct one.

We read Bear Says Thanks for the Virtual Book Club and guess what? We focused on homophones too! I hope that’s ok. I love seeing your ideas and I will use them to extend our learning even further.
