Baking with My Kids

I’m not really a foodie, definitely not a chef, and only ok at easy baking … but I do know the value of baking with my kids.  I remember helping my mom in the kitchen; the fun of creating something together.

Baking with kids is not only great for the wonderful shared experience, but it also teaches them a life skill (everyone needs to know how to prepare food for themselves), responsibility (cleaning up spills, doing the dishes), following directions (reading a recipe), and measuring skills.

We didn’t get a chance to make the gingerbread cookies we were going to do around Christmas, so the other day we finally did some baking.

Honor “rolling” out the dough … she’d rather sample.

Using the cookie cutters!

The assortment of gingerbread cookies post-baking.

And, then the fun of decorating them!!!

Honor went with the princess theme … surprise!  (Honor & I need practice in our cookie decoration skills!)

But Henry did an AMAZING job on his snowflake!

After baking, decorating, … and eating … we just HAD to read, “The Gingerbread Man” retold by Jim Aylesworth.  It’s a great version, nicely illustrated by Barbara McClintock.  I recommend it for your children’s library if you don’t already have it.

So, what do you LOVE to bake or cook with your kids?  I’d love you to share.

I’d also like to share with you about the collaborative Heart Project to benefit American Heart Association put together by Jamie at Hands On: As We Grow.  The photo of the gingerbread men with Happy Hearts from this post will be included in the beautiful book filled with heart projects.  Hard copies and ebooks will be on sale soon to benefit the AHA.  Click on the link to learn more!
