Thinking Creatively … featuring a book by Kevin Henkes

This month the Summer Virtual Book Club for Kids is featuring Kevin Henkes.  He has TONS of fabulous books for kids … and the blogs that are participating are sure to come with TONS of wonderful related activities.  Many of the bloggers are even doing giveaways of Kevin Henkes books … so make sure you check them out!  (the blog hop is attached at the bottom of this post!)

The idea for the project I came up with for this month required the kids to do the activity/craft first … and THEN read the book.  (previous Virtual Book Club posts)

I presented my kids, Henry (6) and Honor (3), with a sheet of black paper and a white circle … then asked them to create anything they wanted.

Henry quickly got to work.  Honor’s process was slower … and required paint (per her request demand!).  While working on their projects they both told me what they were making … Henry made a white Angry Bird; Honor made a circle (I love the developmentally on-target lack of symbolism!)

THEN I read them…

If you haven’t read the book already (look out … SPOILER ALERT!) the kitten in the book thinks that the full moon is a “little bowl of milk in the sky”.  On her mission to get to the “milk” she runs into a few mishaps.  While reading the book we talked about why the kitten would think the moon and other objects were a bowl of milk (frame of reference) … and we also talked about the pictures they had made.  Honor changed her mind and decided that her picture was of the moon and then moon being reflected in the pond!

I love that I can easily adapt this project into one to use in play therapy … to discuss thinking creatively and understanding frame of reference.

AND, I’d love to hear what your kids come up with.  PLEASE leave me a comment to share!!!

Amanda’s going to be doing this book too, I can’t wait to see what she shares. It’s such a fun book for creative thinking and guessing what can it be.

  5. Julie @ Hey Mommy, Chocolate Milk

Great idea! Creative Thinking all the way…

  6. Mama Cass

Hmm… posted my sponge activity to the wrong area. While it would go along nicely with “Lily Brown’s Paintings,” in which she includes stars in her paintings, it wasn’t a specific book-related activity as required. Sorry about that!
