What’s Your Favorite Animal? – Virtual Book Club for Kids featuring Eric Carle
This month the Virtual Book for Kids is featuring the beloved author/illustrator Eric Carle. I have loved his work for as long as I can remember … and The Very Hungry Caterpillar was one of the first books I read to my kids!
We recently acquired one of his newer books … What’s Your Favorite Animal? “In this book, fourteen beloved children’s book artists draw their favorite animals and explain why they love them.” I thought this would be the PERFECT fit for the Virtual Book Club for Kids because it highlights wonderful people in the field of children’s literature .
The activity I came up with to go along with the book was for the kids to pick their favorite animal (or two!! or three!!!) and use what ever media they wanted to create an image of the animal on a canvas.
Honor’s turned more into a process art. She chose a dog and using our own dog, Odin, as her model she painted him in watercolors … and a sun … and a rainbow … and then blended it all together. She said that the dog was playing hide-and-seek!
Henry chose three favorite animals on 2 different canvases. On the first canvas he did a sperm whale and a giant squid in watercolor. The second canvas was a snake drawn in crayon.
And I couldn’t sit back and let them have all the fun! I did a canvas of MY favorite animal … the penguin … in a multitude of ways. Marker, crayon, oil pastel, torn paper, and watercolor.
What animal would your kids choose? How would they choose to create it? Give it a try!
And don’t forget to check out the other great ideas linked up for this month’s Virtual Book Club for Kids featuring Eric Carle.

Eric Carle has so many great books (the illustrations always amaze me!) I think our favorite is Mr. Seahorse.
