Upcycle an Egg Carton for Spring

I remember having fun making flowers out of egg cartons when I was little, so I decided to introduce the project to my daughter.

All you need is an egg carton and pipe cleaners.  I cut out the individual egg pieces.  At first I had her try and cut slits into the pieces to practice her cutting skills, but then we got wrapped up into just making the flowers.  She really enjoyed pushing the pipe cleaners in … and the instant satisfaction of creating a flower!

When we were done with the flowers, we still had the top of the egg container.  This reminded me of a super-cute project that I had seem from The Iowa Farmer’s Wife: pipe cleaner rainbows.  Again, all you need is an egg carton (she used a mushroom container) and pipe cleaners.

We used the top of the egg container as a “sky-like” base for her rainbow.  It was a great fine motor skill and strength building for her to push the pipe cleaners through the styrofoam.

What beautiful spring creations!

  1. Great use of egg cartons! I wonder what they would look like painted?

Trisha, I’ve seen the cardboard-ish egg cartons painted as flowers … and they are beautiful. The styrofoam egg cartons don’t take to the paint as well, but still look cool! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

Looks like a great fine motor skill to me and from her smile, I’m guessing fun!

Very cute flowers- I remember making these when I was little but I haven’t done this with my littles yet, it may be time to. :)

  5. Ohhh I love these – I remember painting styrofoam egg cartons as a kid – we used to mix the poster paint/tempura paint 50:50 with pva/white school glue and it would stay on the styrofoam and not come off. It works on everything that mix (It’s like coloured modge podge apparently!)

  6. Love the rainbow! I never made egg carton flowers as a child and now I think I must!

Wow! Very cute and adorable. Awesome and perfect for the kids! I really loved the materials you put to complete the features the flower. We did an Egg Carton Color Sorting Activity game out of the same materials you used. You should check it out! :)
